In secondary school history class, many of us learnt that the secret to Singapore’s accelerated development and success as a country has been closely linked to its initial success as a trading port. Ships and vessels from all over the world have been coming here for over a century and the iconic image of ships in our harbour has become part of our national psyche and a symbol of prosperity.
